This may or may not become “a thing” on the blog, but after futzing about with a recent Smashwords purchase and my Android phone (my usual purchases from Smashwords get read on my laptop), I thought I’d share with the class a quick and dirty way I get my Smashbooks onto my phone for reading out and about.  Aldiko Readeris an .epub-compatible reading app available for Android that is hooked into All Romance Ebooks, Smashwords, and Feedbooks. It’s a pleasant little reading app that lets you pull in purchases from multiple stores or your archives. If you’ve made your purchase on your home computer, there’s no intuitive way to tell Aldiko to download your purchase and import it. The easiest way to get an ebook from Smashwords to Aldiko is to download the epub to your device from Smashwords, then import the epub into Aldiko Reader. I’m assuming you already have a Smashwords account and you’ve installed Aldiko Reader app for Android on your device from the Google Play store.

  1. Use your Android browser to open up the Smashwords mobile site.
  2. Login to Smashwords and the page will redirect to your Library.
  3. Scroll down to the book you want to import and select it. Select the “epub” version to “download.”
  4. Once your download is complete, open Aldiko reader, then select “Files” from the home screen.
  5. In your “downloads” folder, you’ll find the ebook. Check it, then select “Import” and let ‘er rip.

Here, try it out with Forever Material, my flirty, sexy, rom-com romp, or The Spelling Error, my sweet Pagan short love story. 🙂 Smashwords offers you many different choices to read ebooks the way you want to read them, and the downloads are always there. For many books (mine included) you also get more of a book sample (because the publisher gets to set the sample size). Smashwords editions come in Kindle-compatible files (.mobi), the standard .epub formats that are friendly to Nooks and Kobo readers, and Sony ereader editions as well as more basic and convert-able files like html and rtf. If you haven’t checked them out already, consider doing so. They’re another great place to find great reads!

  1. You’re very welcome! I love Smashwords because of the freedom, but there is a downside to not forcing you to a native reading app.
